Rey KM Domurat (1991) is a Polish audio engineer and activist based in Berlin.
Rey’s journey began with a passion for music that paved the way to producing experimental sound for dance performances, installations, and film. Throughout their career, Rey has performed under various artistic names, blurring the boundaries of genres with broad influences such as jazz, trip-hop, IDM, ambient, and techno music. Their aural-visual work has been featured at Berlin’s Schwules Museum, Sophiensäle Berlin, the Vaud Museum of Fine Arts in Lausanne, the Transgressive Cultures Conference at the University of Chicago Center in Paris, BBC Worldwide, and in galleries and launch events in New York, London, and Sydney.
Since 2014, they have led Uferlos Studios, while working with recording, mixing, mastering, and live sound engineering for numerous artists such as Sanni Est, Mala Herba, Queerdos, Rasha Nahas, and Maison Metamose. They have collaborated in social benefit projects including a 125-track long V/A TOTAL SOLIDARITY COMPILATION in support of the campaign against LGBTQ+ free zones in Poland; a 93-track long benefit compilation entitled SONIC RESISTANCE for Rojava in solidarity with the feminist movement in Northern Syria; a 73-track long Compilation for Belarus with Radio Kapital in solidarity with victims of state repression; and Pathways in Berlin, an initiative to connect and grow networks to raise the visibility of underrepresented communities in the music industry.
Rey graduated with honours upon receiving their Bachelor of Science in Audio Production. They also attained a Diploma in Audio Engineering at SAE Institute Berlin, in partnership with the Middlesex University in London. From 2019 onwards, Rey has been the sound engineer for spaces such as SAVVY Contemporary, Whole| United Queer Festival, Soho House Berlin, CTM Festival, and more.
In 2023, they founded U70 – an aural-visual production studio and digital archive, with the aim to facilitate, document, and amplify accessibility to live performance art produced by contemporary creators of diverse experiences. The philosophy of U70 is to deconstruct heteronormativity and gender norms, while prioritizing a more just bridge across cultures and socio-economic backgrounds.
Dr Rey plays with the audience, improvising with psychoacoustics and exciting tangible vibrations by employing vogue technology, analogue and digital machines, and layering opera singing and instrumental soundscapes with AI processing.
For their current collaborations, Rey delivers immersive live acts accompanied by visionary approaches to sound engineering. they sculpture a unique experience of sound that dials between frequencies and paces the notions of suspense and release throughout performances.
The basic technical requirements for the shows include careful soundcheck and set-up time, budgeting for the industry standard sound system, and laying out and caring for the special tuning of the chosen and relevant sound system. In doing so, they creatively harmonize the unique acoustics of the individual event space in the context envisioned for the show.
